  • Before the training starts, the trainer should determine any potential obstacles to incorporating maths in the lesson plan. Particularly those related to delivery and communication, take action to remove the obstacles.
  • A trainer should recognise common symptoms of maths anxiety in a learner. They can help the learner overcome this difficulty through coaching and mentoring.
  • If data from initial and diagnostic maths assessments are available, interpret them. You can also use learner profiles to modify lesson plans and edit for students with different learning needs.
  • Analyse your personal learning program's maths requirements with GCSE/Functional Skills maths.

Approaches to Teaching

Embedding the minimum core maths in your training can improve logical understanding for the learners. 

  • Promote open discussion about maths using correct terms and a positive attitude toward maths. This can be best achieved by demonstrating the attitude yourself.
  • When addressing maths-related activities in the classroom, trainers should conduct research and create strategies to assist learners.
  • When solving problems involving maths, use a step-by-step method when necessary.
  • Give trainees time in class to work on maths concepts by analysing them and discussing them with others. 
  • Where appropriate, promote visual aids (such as bar models) to minimise memory load and improve fluency.
  • The trainer should identify the abilities required to complete maths-related tasks and determine whether learners already possess or can learn them.
  • To encourage complete and in-depth understanding and draw connections to existing knowledge and other important mathematical concepts and topics.
  • Research and add various methods in your lesson plan, including practising with partners and peer support to help with maths-related tasks. Please encourage students to discuss the methods used, identify them, and share their results.
  • Explain how to use misunderstandings and uncertainties to your advantage. Trainers can add such discussions to their training and learners' progress.

Developing skills for better job opportunities is part of the training process. The trainer can equip learners with relevant skills by embedding the minimum core elements in their teaching.

  • To better prepare your students for the workplace and real life, provide examples of the maths abilities needed in various professions relevant to the programme.
  • Give examples and help learners understand industry-specific situations in which they can use maths to their advantage.
  • Educate students on how maths abilities may promote social and economic activities and their role in public life.
